Melasma

What is Melasma?

Many people want flawless skin, free of blemishes, pigmented spots, and other imperfections. However, perfect skin is not easy to achieve, especially when certain skin conditions develop. If you’ve developed brown or dark pigmented spots on your skin, it can be difficult to get rid of them on your own or try to cover them up. These spots may indicate melasma, a skin condition that doesn’t cause harm to your health, but many find it to be an aesthetic concern.

What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin pigmentation disorder affecting 1.5 to 33 percent of the population. It causes brown or gray patches to appear on the skin, often on the face, though it can also occur on the neck, arms, and back. When melasma develops on the face, it typically appears on the cheeks, chin, bridge of the nose, forehead, or above the upper lip.

Although both men and women experience melasma, it is far more likely to occur in women. Pregnancy and the use of hormonal birth control pills can make women more susceptible to melasma. Some people are genetically predisposed to develop melasma, as about 50 percent of people with melasma have family members with the condition.

How Does Melasma Treatment Work?

Every patient has unique skin, so it makes sense that what works great for some people may not work as well for others. At NOVA Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, we offer customized melasma treatment plans for patients, catering each treatment step to suit their skin needs. During a consultation with us, you’ll meet with one of our Physician Assistants, who will assess your skin and listen to your areas of concern and aesthetic goals. A treatment plan will be designed for you based on what is discussed during your consultation. This treatment plan may include skin care products, topical treatments, microneedling, chemical peels, or other methods.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Melasma Treatment?

Most people who have been diagnosed with melasma can be good candidates for treatment.

However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and patients going through chemotherapy are not candidates.
